Every season I get sucked into watching Nashville Star by the simple fact that I love cover songs. From the truly great ones like Hendrix doing "All Along The Watchtower" or Soundgarden's incredible spin on Black Sabbath's "Into The Void," right on through to the absurdly obscure, like Shakira playing "Back In Black," they're all good. For me, Nashville Star is just a big weekly collection of odd covers.
It's with that thought process that I was tuned in again this week, when something caught my ear. Ashlee Hewitt's (pictured) first performance was the classic Steve Miller Band tune, "Take The Money And Run." There was one odd little exception though. Your years of classic rock radio should have taught you that Billy Joe and Bobbie Sue were "two young lovers with nothing better to do, than sit around the house, get high, and watch the tube." Suddenly this week, they changed to "two young lovers, with nothing better to do, than sit around the house, sit around, and watch the tube." That just isn't right. See for yourself, after the jump.

It's a good time to be AMC. There is no shortage of praise for their period drama, Mad Men, or for the quirky Breaking Bad. They're not resting on their laurels though, as evidenced by the announcement of two more pilot projects. First up is the series adaptation of the David Gold novel, Carter Beats The Devil.
It's the story of a 1920s magician that becomes implicated in the death of President Harding. Given the recent track record with Mad Men, the idea of a story set in the 20s, and involving the world of magic, certainly seems to have a lot of potential. The book was previously being developed as a feature film, with Tom Cruise rumored to be involved. The script is by Wesley Strick (Cape Fear, The Saint) and will be produced by John Baldecchi and Rich Silverman (The Mexican).
The other new project for the network is Ice. It's set in the dangerous world of New York diamond merchants and said to be a family drama. The pilot was written by Christian Darren (Hustle: The Pete Rose Story) and will be directed by Vadim Perelman (House Of Sand And Fog). Both projects are too late for AMC's 2008 pilot season, but will be part of the 2009 plan.

Do not adjust your web browser. You are now entering the Retro Squad, where we are reviewing past episodes of classic TV shows.
With the exception of Coach, no one knows exactly what became of the gang at Cheers. What follows is a collection of hypothetical obits for the regulars at everyone's favorite Boston hangout.
Hilary "Norm" Peterson
1948-2002
"Norm" Peterson was struck down by a fatal heart attack after attending a party honoring a friend in Seattle. Mr. Peterson was a loving husband, talented house painter and an accountant. He is survived by his wife Vera, who requests to be left to grieve in private. Services will be held at the The Hungry Heifer in Boston.

A day hasn't gone by where we haven't received some sort of tip or email asking us, the TV Squad, how to get on [insert reality show here]. Unfortunately no, Simon Cowell does not work for us, and Donald Trump isn't my BFF, so we really can't help all that much.
The folks at RealityWanted.com often send us a list of new and existing reality shows that are looking for new, er, talent, and they've given us permission to make mention of them here. We'll try to make this a regular feature as often as we get a new list.
This time we have America's Next Top Model and a lot of new shows.

(S02E01) Man, it's been a long time since last season. I remembered very little of what they showed in the recap and after being reminded, I was hungry for the new season.
It occurs to me as I'm watching this episode that Michael Westen is a less philanthropic MacGyver. He knows a lot of tricks that will help you in sticky situations but he's smart enough to keep most of them to himself. I, personally, have never had to run from the police but if I ever do, I now know the best way to stop the airbags from going off.

Just in time for tonight's second season premiere of Burn Notice comes this little piece of news from the studios at NBC.
Two guys on the staff of Late Night with Conan O'Brien are so ticked off at the ads for the USA show (USA is part of the NBC Universal family) that appear in the building that they decided to deface them. The insults range from dialogue bubbles that say "It 'Burns' when I pee" and "Thanks for the 'Notice' " to this entry on the Late Night blog where the staffers complain about the ads and explain their actions. It is kinda funny how many of these ads NBC puts in their own building.
Of course, the blog entry isn't all bad and acts as a nudge-nudge wink-wink push for the show. Despite the graffiti, the Late Night guys do say that the show is "awesome," "smart," and "funny," and they even want to make sure you watch the show tonight. (And I'd like to repeat that too - watch Burn Notice tonight at 10 on USA!)
